In ancient England, people couldn't read. So, the pubs each had pictures to represent their names. This is why you have pubs now called the "**** and lion" or the "bull and beggar."

Truth: I had this picture on my rotating screensaver, a coworker who is from boon-hick-ville-crap-hole-USA kindly, and seriously explained to me that the boots are actually to keep the cow from walking away. Serious.
